Mackenzie Lake

Elegant, fresh and balanced.  These are the clients words  that became the inspiration for this McKenzie Lake home.  This incredible transformation started with original oak cabinetry, multi-tiered island, and out-dated finishes and resulted in a space perfectly formed around the client’s lifestyle.  Now, an entertaining haven, this main floor renovation celebrates the importance of family, community and a peaceful space to enjoy a single cup of tea each morning.

Mount Pleasant (Custom Home)

This new custom home build was designed with a warm contemporary feeling in mind.  This inner city home respects the transitional community while creating its own statement of space.  Fully vaulted ceilings throughout the entire upper level speak volumes to its light and airy character.  An oversized custom hood and jumbo quartz island serve to create a sense of balance against the more detailed cabinetry towers and quality storage solutions.

Kensington

With a high appreciation of antiques and vintage characteristics, this client desired an eclectic design that would incorporate elements from the past. Through the reuse of existing items located in the home, we were able to find a new purpose for sentimental pieces.  For example, the home owner’s antique change table has become the kitchen’s new sink base cabinet.  The fireplace is supported by a vintage headboard and the washroom is decorated with a variety or original mirrors. New elements such as the walk-through, full height shadow box serves as additional display areas.

Have you ever wondered if it possible to double your storage space without increasing the physical size of your kitchen?  This space is an excellent example of how to accomplish such a wonderful goal.  Custom storage solutions were an integral part of this project and include items such as; extra deep drawers for small appliances, pull out spice racks, custom tray dividers, integrated recycling/compost/garbage pull-outs, unique wine and tea units and the corner pantry was replaced with floor to ceiling cabinetry, converting this dark small kitchen into a chef’s dream.

Hamptons

This whole home renovation included ceilings, flooring, kitchen, bathrooms, furniture sourcing and structural beams to create an open concept living space.  It was important to the clients to use real wood cabinetry within a sleek design style to substantially modernize the home.  The home owners were interested in the modern look of bamboo but needed a product that would be sensitive to our dry climate.  The result was to utilize a sleek rift cut oak with natural finish throughout.  Floor to ceiling tile emphasized the large en-suite and removing the toilet closet allowed us to increase the size of their beautiful shower substantially.

This original character home has been in the family for generations.  Over the years, additions had been added to increase the overall sq.ft, making this a lovely space with many challenges.  Therefore, this renovation included everything from subfloor repair and structural support changes to integral slabs of Italian quartzite and wonderfully intricate glass chandeliers.  The new butler’s pantry, family bar, bathroom and kitchen utilized a two tone colour design that eliminates the ability to time stamp this renovation project; allowing this modern design to compliment the mature surrounding setting.

Through the use of strong architectural lines, this fully remodelled en-suite creates an immediate statement piece.  The walk around shower with curb-less floor feature and full stone wall tile implicates an outdoor style washing space.  These architectural elements are successfully lightened by incorporating the soft curves of the free standing tub and rounded pendant lights.  A stone vessel sink and floating wood makeup area has been added to accentuate its natural features.

Rocky Ridge

Initial discussions with the clients focused around use of space and functionality.  The original u-shaped kitchen made entertaining awkward, separating the cook from the rest of the party.  Not only did creating one large island make this prep space much more efficient, it also maximized storage area and allowed for integrated seating.  A custom coffee station was designed into the pantry area and beautiful open shelving proudly stands against an arboresque tiled backsplash, flattering the high ceilings.

Okotoks

Situated on a beautiful acreage in Okotoks, this farmhouse style kitchen boasts some very unique design elements.  The heart of this space celebrates a large baking centre that can be completely closed off when not in use.  Through modern electrical design and custom cabinetry, we were able to control the power needed for all of the client's small appliances; power conveniently shuts off when the doors are closed and comes on when open.  Every surface was considered in the creation of this space.  The walls were lined with painted brick and the upper cabinetry was designed with an open back in order for the dishes to sit directly against this new brick feature.  Furthermore, wallpaper was integrated behind open shelving to create a very warm, character rich, space.

Scenic Acres Home Renovation

Situated in the popular Calgary Scenic Acre’s neighbourhood, this project required a whole home renovation. The house was suffering from outdated everything from the kitchen, tile flooring, paint, En-suite, bathrooms, laundry room, and family room. The customer wanted a fresh design without moving out of their empty nest house with life-long friends and family members close by. Why down size when you can just renovate, Right? Our design was to make the living room and kitchen all one living space for the extended families and grandchildren to enjoy. We removed a wall that separated the kitchen and living room with the help of an engineered beam to open up the space into the two-story living room. The natural light flows right through to the kitchen into the family room. We refreshed the original floors with a sanding and restraining on the main floor of the house. The house received a completely new coat of paint with all the popcorn ceilings removed. New built-in cabinetry in the family room around the fireplace makes the area modern without losing its character. The final touches were to improve the En-suite with a glass shower and new tub. The results speak for themselves.

MacEwan Ridge Kitchen Renovation

In this project Marwood Designs transformed a tired dark 1990's kitchen lacking storage space, area for dining and poor lighting into a modern galley. The owner moved into this older town house requiring a kitchen to be modern in design with added extra storage within a small space. We redesigned the cabinetry taking full advantage of the space up to the ceiling plus improving space efficiency. Marwood Designs added an island to solve the lack of extra counter space for those big holiday baking days. In addition, the island allowed for romantic intimate dinners without a large production in the dining room. The end result is a kitchen that allows the natural light to illuminate the space with a beautiful blue bottom cabinetry to offset the white. The transformation speaks of a southern sun room kitchen!

Acadia Townhouse

Located in the longstanding Acadia neighbourhood in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, this dated townhouse needed a new kitchen, foyer, dining area face lift. To accommodate the new kitchen design, we lengthen the fridge wall by moving a partition with HVAC and plumping. This allowed to fit all the new appliances within the new design resulting in a beautiful spacious galley. We also removed the return walls at the other end of the kitchen nook allowing natural light into the space adding to the fresh ambiance. Correspondingly, we added an island anchored partially within the living room space which gave additional storage and dinning space. We added storage cabinetry in the foyer, removal dated popcorn ceilings, fresh coat of paint and new flooring transported this townhouse from dark and dreary to clean, fresh and functional.

Condo Renovation

This 1700 sqf. condo overlooking downtown Calgary was suffering from an outdated kitchen, a view partial obstructed by a patio door and outdated floors and lighting. Marwood Designs modernized the kitchen with bright colours hiding the fridge to blend the galley with modern materials at the same time maximizing space. In the living room, we moved the door to the side window opening allowing for maximum light that improve the incredible view of the Bow River and downtown Calgary. The floors where brighten and the old-style track lighting replaced with pot lighting giving the condo a contemporary finish. The completed project creates a space that is special and distinct enjoying the serenity of Calgary .

Brockington Bathroom

The Challenge of this project was to convert a dingy cramped laundry room with a storage/ utility room into an oasis of peace and tranquility bathroom that meets every sensation with heated floors, a body jet shower, sauna, and a deep soaker tub among the ambient lights in the basement. The obstacles were many but the result……is heaven. The client needed a second bathroom for the new blended family of four young male adults. Bursting at the seams, this house did not have any other options other than revamping the basement utility room and laundry room. The result is a masculine industrialized mood that meets contemporary tile, glass in the midst of open painted rafters. Decorated with modern pendants sets the mood of sophistication and functionality.

Tuscany Kitchen

The goal of this project was to have a modern kitchen with a country home elegance. In this example, we mix three essential ingredients for creating a country homestyle cooking space: Modern features, rustic elements, and industrial-inspired accents. When blended just right, the result is a sophisticated kitchen that's also warm and inviting keeping the charm of an old country kitchen. There are no hard-set rules for modern farmhouse colors. However, a winning palette seen in many spaces combines pastels, black, and natural wood tones. We loved the original walnut floor and worked with earthy colours of light greens and coffee hues to make the kitchen inviting to an old farmhouse with all the functions of modern appliances.

We were able to accomplish all the needs of the client’s project that started out as kitchen renovation. The project scope refocused on renovating the main floor living area, a new kitchen, an updated laundry room, and a new powder room. The main floor kitchen space felt cramped due to a small dining room near the sliding doors. To gain space we started with a smaller footprint of the kitchen island and moved the dining area to the right of the island opening up the kitchen, gaining space with natural light flowing through the sliding doors.  We removed the old dated popcorn ceilings and relocated the pot lights to give better lighting in areas that needed it and removed lights that didn’t need it. The end result is a country kitchen with character and charm.
